This place was bustling on the beautiful sunny day we headed over, and I now know why. Everything about this place was great! The server was smiley and took great care to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The food was fresh and tasty, and sitting outside in the fresh air with the lovely park and lake view was unbeatable. The french fries are so good, they don't need ketchup! Breakfast dining at John's transports you well back into the last century when folks had significantly different service and culinary expectations. Don't miss the experience. As I entered John shouted a hearty "Sit anywhere and I'll be with you in a minute." greeting from the open kitchen in the rear of his restaurant. So I sat at the chrome-trimmed counter and the few nearby customers nodded their welcomes to me. John promptly brought the menu and my coffee. "If you want a refill, help yourself.", he said pointing to the coffee brewer on the back bar. I like this. It's like being transported back into Mayberry, West Virginia. Only Sheriff Andy and Deputy Barney haven't arrived for their morning coffees yet. My scrambled eggs were perfectly done, light and fluffy with just the right amount of moistness. The accompanying sausages were lightly grilled. Just browned, not deep fried that renders the casing nearly inedible as most others places seem to do in the name of culinary expediency these days. A customer from further down the counter strikes up a conversation with me and then takes out his wallet to show me the picture of his first car, a 1954 Ford. What do you have in your wallet? John is 85 and in apparent good health. But go to this little glimpse of the past and revel in the experience. It may not be available to you much longer. If it's not too busy, ask and John will share some details of his lifelong career of serving others carefully, charmingly, honestly and completely to the very best of his ability. How many other restaurants can do that? John's prices are embarrassingly low while the experience is rich beyond all expectations. I didn't want to leave. Lire plus

Omg this place is an absolute Gem! My husband , myself and my mother inlaw were on our way from New Brunswick to Ontario. During a snow storm ( March 4th 2023) the owner G was amazing! The breakfast was the best I've ever had. The coffee is so so good! The customer service and hospitality we received here will be something we all talk and rave about forever! The Toucan and Kirkpatrick's is one Kingston's best Irish-British Pubs. This is, "the local," for many 21-40+ Kingstonians. The Great selection of beers and liquor, live music at least one day a week, daily specials and sunday breakfast special, make this establishment a favorite. The staff is friendly, and the food is reasonably priced and is usually quite good. However, this place is a Pub first, then a Restaurant. It is solid UK+US "Pub Grub." Wings, Nachos, Meat Pies, Bangers and Mash Fish n' Chips are reliably awesome. The review below is not an accurate depiction of the place, however, it may well take 45mins on a Sunday morning or afternoon to get food quickly due to the $3.50 breakfast special and the hangover destructing properties inherent to the aura of the toucan, which draw many over-zealous drinkers. We were staying in Kingston at the Holiday Inn and decided to use the in hotel restaurant. It was a pleasant experience and we were seated beside a window, so we got to see the lake. It started to get fairly busy, but wasn't loud at all. There was a menu, but we both decided to try the buffet. The food was decent with a lot to choose from - I may have had more than I needed to. The wine selection was standard, nothing spectacular. Our server (I forget her name) was quite attentive and very engaging. Will definately try again if we decide to visit Kingston. Lire plus

We arrived in Kingston for a hockey tournament and searched for a restaurant that was able to accommodate a group of 40, half of which were kids. The owner together with his staff welcomed our team and did an amazing job. The kids had a great time, the service was the best we've seen from any east side Mario's, and they did a great job on the food. Hats off to the staff and the owner for going above and beyond! I am confused by the "American" designation, since it is clearly German, right down to the delicious spaetzle and red cabbage. (You can only get the red cabbage if you ask, it isn't on the menu.) The schnitzels are very good, with ample portions. (We have never tried the homemade desserts -- too full!) The meat is tender and set off well by the fine breading. My husband has tried every schnitzel on the menu, and has a hard time declaring a favourite - he enjoys them all. The coffee is very good, the warm bun that comes prior to the meal is a nice treat. The service is usually very pleasant. A little more than a standard lunch in terms of cost, but worth it. Lire plus
