In Kensington Market, Dancing Days are definitely here and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Owner Nigel Murray opened the flashy clothing store in 1989, and although he has changed his business model and has seen many changes in the market over the years, he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
“I started as a vintage store, went for 10 years, and the vintage kept getting harder and harder to get. It was getting dried up in the city and there is only so much vintage,” Nigel says.
With such an increasing number of vintage stores competing for the same merchandise, he decided to move in a different direction. “Here I used to sell retro, funky, hippie-kind of used clothes like embroidery blouses and bell bottoms. But now, I make them new,” he says. “I make my stuff new, but to look like retro.”
