Take a step into what a real British pub is like when you walk through the doors of TheDog & Duck Pub in the Manchester neighbourhood off MacLeod Trail in southeast Calgary. “It’s a real original, authentic English pub,” says owner John Erk. “It’s like you’re home away from home. Even our patio is like your own unique backyard garden. It doesn’t feel like a cookie cutter pub.”
The Dog & Duck Pub is set in an old farmhouse that was built in the 1920s. The building has housed many things over the years, including an antique store. In 1989, a transplanted Brit who was missing the authentic pub experience from home set out to recreate it here. Despite the renovations the space has undergone over the years, the old oak and brass features are still prominent, which lent well to the real 'pub feel.' John, who had spent years tending bar in the pub, eventually bought the place for himself in 2004. “It’s not the average pub," he says with pride. "When you come for the first time, you’ll be hooked. It’s different; it's a real English-style pub.”
