John Williams opened up the Blue Plate Diner in 2004, when Edmonton’s downtown scene was struggling a little. Initially, Blue Plate Diner neighboured a seedy hotel on one end of the street, and dilapidated warehouses on the other. A lot has changed since then, with a vibrant downtown core growing all the time. Today, the hotel is gone, two high-rises have gone up, and those warehouses have been turned into highly sought-after condos. “I’d like to think we were instrumental in that change,” says John. “We were one of the first restaurants and businesses. I kind of think we became a destination restaurant at that time and encouraged other people to look at this street with fresh eyes.”
The popular downtown market now sets up outside the Blue Plate Diner’s door during the summer, further adding to the street’s trendy vibe. “That was huge. That definitely added value to the atmosphere as well.”

Best breakfast in Edmonton and most cities for that matter. Perfection!
This was one of our favourite spots until today when our friend's allergic reaction was handed extremely poorly! She has a nut allergy, prior to ordering she asked if her dish contained nuts and she was assured the only dish with nuts in it is the peanut butter pie. She ended up needing to use her epipen in their washroom and nearly vomited. She was never asked if she was ok, the manager never came to check on us and in the end she was even handed her bill! We were just in shock, disgusting.
This particular restaurant was a last minute choice when my family and I were dying of hunger after an extremely long day that started at 6 in the morning. We tried to find the closest restaurant possible and found this one only 4 blocks away from out hotel. The design of the diner was very modern, cool and comfortable. I almost pictured my first date there. Any who let's finally talk about the food. I ordered a stir fry which you could either get with shrimp or chicken. I am a huge shrimp fan so I just had to try it. When the order came my jaw dropped to the ground because of the size and appeal of the dish. There was delicious rice on the bottom of the simple, white, oval plate covered with a medley of deliciously sauced vegetables. The whole dish was garnished with slithered almonds which really pulled everything together. This dish truly made the whole tiring day worth it. The fun isn't over yet!! A meal never feels complete until you get the dessert menu. This particular menu almost made me order everything it had on there but I don't think my father, who was paying for the dinner, would appreciate that. I finally came to a decision to get their blackberry cheesecake which was their current cheesecake flavor. Now let me tell you, the moment I had a bite of that, it felt like heaven in a cheesecake. It was so creamy and what made it better was a dollop of airy whipped cream. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better dinner.
Blue Plate is fantastic! I'm there at least a couple times per month. I was there last Friday and had another great meal. Fridays are a great day to go: they always feature a vegetarian and a meat special, paired with a wine or beer selected by Divine Wines just down the street. Brunch is also great to check out on Saturdays and Sundays... but they are always busy so a reservation would be a good idea. There is always great music playing and new art on the walls. A very friendly and comfortable neighbourhood restaurant.
