A bright, modern interior greets visitors to Clay Oven in Calgary’s northeast as the scent of delicious spices waft from the kitchen. The Punjabi restaurant has become a staple in Calgary’s culinary landscape since it first opened in 1997, a favourite with diners and critics alike. Owner Balpreet Gill is understandably proud of the business he’s built up with partner Bindu since taking over running the restaurant from his father, Gurnek, in 2009.
The Clay Oven moved from its original location in December 2016 – but it didn’t go far. "We always knew we wanted to make it bigger and better,” Balpreet says. “You couldn’t do much with the old place because of the size. It’s only a block away so we kept all of our same clientele." The menu features classics such as lamb, chicken or beef vindaloo and aloo gobi as well as some unexpected dishes, such as mixed sabzi – a delicious mix of potatoes, cauliflower, peas, carrots, green and red bell peppers cooked in fragrant spices.
“We added some new items to our menu and we have a more extensive liquor menu. We have cocktails now and draft beers,” Balpreet says. Those draft beers are from Calgary breweries, Wild Rose and Big Rock – just one sign the Clay Oven likes to support the local community.
