While not everyone can handle their tequila, Latin liquors and cocktails are about more than just everyone’s favourite bar shot. There’s mezcal, caipirinhas, mojitos and margaritas available at these great Edmonton restaurants. They also serve top-shelf tequila, for those bold enough to take it on.
The menu is worldly, and so is the drinks list. They serve a batch of fine tequilas and mezcals, plus cocktails made from scratch, with fresh-squeezed juices. You can sip on one of their margaritas, caipirinhas or mojitos, made with real lime juice. One of their more unusual concoctions is the Jamaican Sunset, a blend of dark rum, orange sorbet and hibiscus syrup.
This Mexican restaurant, located in St. Albert, is a great place to unwind with a shot of tequila or five (anytime the word tequila is mentioned right in the name, it’s a good sign). Soak up all that tequila with a few helpings of their house-made salsas, which include verde (tomatillo, cilantro, jalapeno and onion), caliente (tomato, habanero, jalapeno, cilantro and lime) and roja (tomato, cilantro, lime, jalapeno and onion).
Located in the Mercer Warehouse, this restaurant serves up platters of beautifully roasted meats, alongside some Latin liquors. They serve everything from mezcal, tequila and cervezas to Cuba Libres and tamarind margaritas. Try the Mezcal Mule, a mix of mezcal, tequila, bitters and piloncillo sugar, topped off with ginger beer, or a Paloma, a combo of tequila resposado and blanco, grapefruit juice, sparkling water, fresh lime juice, simple syrup and salt. If you like classic Mexican drinks, stick to the Casa de Rostizado margarita, which consists of tequila blanco, triple sec and fresh lime juice.
This Mexican eatery and lounge is home to a plethora of fancy tequilas and mezcals (more than 140 kinds, currently). They’re one of only nine places in the world that are certified by the Tequila Regulatory Council (yes, that’s a real thing), and their bartenders get creative with the cocktails. Choose from blanco, resposado, anejo, extra anejo or mezcal (all 100 per cent agave, each kind with its own flavour). They also serve Mexican beers, freshly made margaritas and some fun cocktails, including a Mexican Popsicle (Havana Club Three Year, Crème de Cacao and jalapeno syrup).
