Was it coincidence or fate that Debbie Ranger’s hand-me-down childhood pram originally came from a store that was owned by her husband Bill’s great-grandmother? A generation later, in 1945, Bill’s grandparents opened Macklem's Baby Carriage & Toys at the north end of Toronto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood.
Fast-forward seven decades, and Bill and Debbie continue to run the store with the same commitment to value, quality and service. Macklem's family-run feel starts with its spacious-yet-manageable showroom, which is a far cry from the daunting warehouse spaces occupied by some of the competition.
“We really try to simplify the process for customers,” Bill explains. “We don’t tell them to buy anything and everything. We help them decide what they really need, and then they can go from there.”
