Even before the end of her first lesson, Lucy Falkner was hooked.
“I showed up at a drop-in lesson, not knowing anything about swing dancing, Lindy Hop, any of it,” she recalls. “And like a lot of people, I was hooked right away. I kept coming out after that first day. I would make sure I got there at the beginning of the dance so I didn't miss a song, and I'd stay to the end. That obsession starts early for a lot of people.”
That was 15 years ago. Since then, Lucy has shared her obsession with hundreds of Vancouverites as the head of Rhythm City Productions, a dance program that specializes in vintage jazz music and dance, including Lindy Hop, 1920s Charleston and solo jazz. Founded in 2008, Rhythm City teaches weekly classes at a variety of levels, from beginner to intermediate, and even includes advanced programs like “The Lab”: a place for experienced dancers to experiment with technique and vintage routines.
