People dance for many reasons – fitness, training and fun among them – with each dance type appealing to certain personalities. For Alberto Gonzalez, one of the owners of Hot Salsa Dance Zone, there was just one type of dancing that really stirred him: Latin dancing. “It’s the atmosphere that the Latin music brings,” he says. “You play it in a room – Latin music – and the warmth of the music starts to create a beautiful connection with people, with each other.” To Alberto, it doesn’t matter if he’s going over a few moves with his students or dancing with his partner, Teresa Szefler, the other owner of Hot Salsa Dance Zone, as long as he can hear the intricate rhythms of salsa music.
Alberto says Teresa feels the same way about salsa music, but adds that bachata also tops her list of favourite dances. “Bachata is a different rhythm,” he explains. “It comes from the Dominican Republic and bachata’s more romantic. With bachata, you can build a very close relationship or have a little distance from each other, but dancing it is a very slow, romantic rhythm.” Together, the two co-owners love dancing salsa with each other, and enjoy feeling the sultry rhythms as they move in step together.
