A must for Montreal Smoked meat.
I love, love, love, love, love, love this place. I always order their hand cut medium (never lean) pastrami sandwich with spicy mustard. The pastrami is juicy and perfectly seasoned and the fact that they cut it by hand makes this sandwich something special. I've also tried their cabbage rolls and they're pretty good too. The store made pickles just tops off the perfect deli meal.
If you like Deli look no further. This is the only place that's comparble to Montreal & New York. iv'e been to many delis in & around town & nothing stacks up to this. I personally would recomend ordering the meat plate. You get a lot of your favorite meat stacked on a plate with bread on the side. It's a better value as you get more meat for for you buck than you would by just ordering a sandwich. The service is nothing special there. It's not badm but then again not good by any means. Most of the servers there have been there for a long time so i guess maybe they feel tired & worn out for some some reason. The atmosphere is nothing special. I'm not to crazy about he lay out, but hen again it's the best tasting deli in town so I guess there's a trade off.
My boyfriend has been talking about taking me here, and we finally went today for lunch. He ordered us both the most popular item on their menu: old fashioned smoked meat (Montreal-style) medium sandwich on rye combo which came with fries and side vinegar-based coleslaw, and a cherry coke for me. Spreading mustard on the sandwich tastes great. Great tasting meat cut thick and stacked high. Coleslaw was OK, couldn't finish it. Fries needed salt. The place was packed - a good sign of good eats. Our bill came to $32 after tip. $12 for each combo.
the meat here is truly ersatz they claim to carry the montreal traditional but they would fail utterly.. but what is worse if the dirty dingy toilet and the careless service
It is hard finding Montreal style hand cut deli in Ontario that is good. Centre street is decent. However please be aware that they are NOT kosher. The food is so-so but again at Israeli side shows the emphasis is cheapness and quantity not style or quality. Moreover they serve beer here - enough said
This is a spectacular deli! We come here frequently. There's always a lineup during busy times, and the place is full even during slow periods. This restaurant specializes in Ashkenaz Jewish cuisine from the Montreal Jewish community. Their Old-Fashioned Smoked Beef on Rye is their best item, with Latkes coming as a close second. My partner is partial to the Lox w/ cream cheese sandwich, and I'm partial to the chicken breast sandwich, which is served with gravy on the side for dipping. The food is spectacular because the ingredients are always top-notch. The food is better than the service. The service isn't terrible -- but they do occasionally screw up an order. They own up for their mistakes, though: I had to schlepp back to get a part of the order that was missed, and they threw in a complementary food item -- delicious cookies -- for my trouble. A footnote about the Smoked Beef: my partner and I are both Montreallers and so I assure the reader we KNOW good Smoked Beef when we taste it. This Smoked Beef on Rye is amongst the very best we've ever had. They hand-cut it instead of machine-slice it, which does indeed make a noticeable difference.
