There is no cake that can’t be made, according to Richmond Hill Bakery Café owners Fred Engler and Avi Shvalbe, and they’ve had some pretty unusual requests. “Even if you want to put something special,” says Fred, “like to make a cake and to put a shoe on it – a shoe! I had an order like this. A woman, she wanted a shoe on a cake.” Fred, of course, was more than happy to do it, calling the end result a little work of art. He takes pleasure in hearing what customers want on their cakes, and has assembled a team of skilled workers to make people’s dessert dreams come true.
While Fred usually handles more basic requests like simple designs and pictures, these elaborately designed treats are always a fun challenge. “We can do everything,” he explains. “Whatever you have in mind, we can produce it.” Avi echoes this sentiment, saying, “Service is the most important thing.”
