The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts is synonymous with beauty and with excellence. Since launching in 1997, the multi-faceted venue has presented a diverse selection of hundreds of internationally renowned performers and guest speakers.
Its programming stems, in many ways, from its location: nestled in the heart of The University of British Columbia campus, the Chan family who founded the Chan Centre were keen to unite performing arts and education. “We’re at a highly regarded institution with an international reputation and we try to link into the values and vision for our university through the performing arts,” explains Joyce Hinton, Co-Managing Director for the Chan Centre.
At the heart of each scheduling decision is a firm belief in the power of art to educate, to bring people from different cultures together.
“If we have fears about another culture, or if we’re alarmed because we don’t know enough about it, the arts is one way that we can introduce, in such a positive way, information about a culture,” says Joyce. “It’s about broadening our horizons and learning about different cultures and issues through performance and dialogue.”
